Local Area

Wild Wombat Walks is located in Waratah, nestled on the edge of takayna. The area is an important base location for us as it allows easy access to takayna and permits our *random* exploration adventures.

Waratah

The village has been here since James “Philosopher” Smith discovered the world’s largest deposit of tin back in 1871. Home to around 250 people, Waratah has won many “Tidiest Towns in Tasmania” awards
yet hardly anyone has heard of it! We proudly boast that we are the only town in the country with a waterfall in town!

The European history of the west coast and Waratah is fascinating and I’ve gone out of my way to learn
a number of the stories of the heyday of West Coast mining….some are ridiculous, others outrageous….
